NORTH AMERICA

This huge, vast and beautiful part of world offers so many aspects of spirituality and all forms of retreats that we hardly know where to begin. So we are trying to build up this section of the Guide in a slow manner, finding places perhaps of very special interest. We begin with the Pacific islands of Hawai'i, long a wonderful vacation place. Aloha!

Kalani Oceanside Retreat

Open Spirituality

Here is what our reader Marilyn Hammill wrote us about Kalani. It is a first hand, enthusiastic report by a serious retreat goer and we are grateful to her for taking the time to write up this report for the Guide. Many thanks Marilyn!

A welcome awaits you at Kalani not only in the spirit of aloha but in the Hawai’ian tradition of ‘ohana (extended family). True to this claim, Kalani is welcoming and generous to all that come to be there but beware - some never leave this paradise in the Pacific. Nestled in coastal tropical rainforest with its own unique flora and fauna, Kalani’s spacious facilities blend into the natural setting on the southeast side of the Big Island of Hawai’i. Fill your lungs and breathe in the cleanest air on the planet, gaze into the expanse of the deep dark night and drink in more stars than you ever imagined were out there, stare into the equal expanse of the Pacific and you may spot frolicking spinner dolphins or be surprised by the enormity of a whale that can flip out of the water with ease and grace; most of all open your heart to the healing energies of the Big Island."

Open: All year round to individuals, families or groups.

Rooms: 47 separate rooms can sleep up to 107 guests with private or shared bathrooms in Tree Houses nestled under the cool shade of a large Monkeypod Tree, Cottages and Lodges or Hales (pronounced Ha'-lay, Hawaiian for "house" or "lodge"). All accommodation is simple and comfortable, without the distraction of television or phones, making it the perfect place to get away and focus on personal wellbeing. Windows are screened in order to improve airflow and views of the grounds. With temperatures ranging from 18 to 29ºC /65 to 85ºF and scented breezes windows become unnecessary. For travellers on a budget, outdoor camping is offered with platforms for tents and optional canopy cover. Campsites are simple with access to outdoor toilets and hot showers.

Facilities: Spacious 120-acres of untouched Hawaiian rainforest and trails, with access to ocean view point where you may spot dolphins or whales at play or observe the sun rising out of the sea - the perfect setting for a retreat. Facilities include a pool, sauna, two outdoor spas/Jacuzzis (in sun and shade), and dining lanai. The gift shop sells daily essentials and free wireless internet access is provided in the attached café.
The venue can host group retreats, workshops, seminars, or special events with more than 17,000 sq. ft. of yoga/dance space and facilities for up to 135 participants. A variety of health and self growth workshops are offered throughout the year.

The famous Hula dance

Spiritual Renewal/Therapeutic Bodywork: Spiritual refuge and retreat from the chaotic world of the 21st century. In the spirit of retreating, guests are respectfully requested to observe quiet time from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. and enjoy the peace of the sounds of nature. Kalani is a wonderful place to embark on a healing journey, to deepen your connection with yourself, other beings, and with the earth. Most importantly, Kalani provides a safe space to experience the beauty of the present moment where all healing takes place. While here, immerse in the feeling of Aloha (sharing of the sacred breath of life) and experience being in an Ohana (extended family), not just with family and friends and the wonderful Kalani staff, but with the Aina (land, that which feeds). Kalani is a great place to get in touch with the energy and power that this transformative island radiates.

In addition to the natural healing energies of the island, therapeutic bodywork is a healthful way to indulge your ‘self’ at Kalani. A variety of therapeutic bodywork is offered in massage studios in a peaceful sanctuary overlooking the pond. Split bamboo blinds give the sense of being in the openness of the natural surroundings yet private and secluded. Or sample aquatic bodywork in the chlorine-free warm pool. Therapeutic bodywork is a wonderful way to support your retreat at Kalani. It offers numerous health benefits and provides deep relaxation, helping you to relieve any tensions you may have brought with you.
Bodywork traditions on offer include: Swedish/Deep Tissue, Sports Massage, Traditional Thai Massage, Shiatsu/Acupressure, Foot Reflexology, Cranial-Sacral Therapy, Polarity, Reiki, Aromatherapy. Or sample Hawai'ian Lomilomi to align your body, mind and spirit with Hot Stone Therapy add the soothing warmth and mana (power) radiating from carefully selected hot stones. Unique Water based bodywork is also available: Watsu (Water Shiatsu), Aqua Veechi, Water Dance (Wassertanzen), Healing Dance, Aqua Cranial.
Additionally, special services are on offer: Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and tui na), Facials and Body Wraps (all-natural and ayurvedic spa treatments for the hands, feet, face, head, and mind), Psychic Readings using the Chakra System as a guide to examine issues concerning your work, health, relationships and spiritual nature.

Meals: Three times a day, guests and staff are summoned by the call of the conch to dine on an open-air lanai (veranda). At this central gathering place, you can experience the daily rhythms of assembly and departure reminiscent of ancient village life. Kalani cuisine encompasses a variety of styles including Thai, Indian, and Italian. Chefs create healthful and delicious meals prepared with the care and love of aloha transmitted through the food to the diner. The abundance of Hawai’i is celebrated by serving local tropical fruits, vegetables and freshly caught fish. Vegetarians and vegans are well cared for.

Special Activities: Kalani offers a variety of daily activities, ranging from meditation and yoga (variety of styles) to Latin dance and volleyball. Taste Hawaiian culture by joining weekly hula and lauhala weaving classes using pandanus leaves harvested from Kalani's own grounds or join the Huna healing circle.

Excursions: Discover Hawaii's spectacular interplay of elements: lava fire, pristine waters, abundant gardens, tall mountains, and cool, scented tropical breezes. Trek through a lava tube, a dark and humid cave formed by Pele's lava; soak in the natural warmth of a large saltwater pond heated by underground geothermal forces, enjoy a relaxing sauna in steamy natural lava caves known as steam vents, explore the summit of Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes or witness new earth as it is created in a spectacular show of lava pouring into the ocean and met by crashing waves sending plumes of smoke into the air. Snorkel along the beautiful shores of a protected natural marine reserve, and discover amazing oceanic flora and fauna of the coral gardens, swim with green turtles (honu) in a warm water ocean pond, appreciate how Hawaiians used to travel the waters of the Pacific by taking a trip on a handcrafted replica of the traditional Wa'akaulua, or double hull Hawaiian sailing canoe. View cascading waterfalls or discover the green sand beach, where the sand is actually fine grains of olivine, an iron-magnesium silicate, just like the olivine recently discovered on Mars.

Situation: For more than 30 years, Kalani has been a soulful place of refuge and renewal for international guests. Kalani is an educational nonprofit organisation that celebrates Hawaii, nature, culture and wellness. Kalani is located on Hawaii Island, commonly known as the Big Island, and is bordered by tropical jungle and the Pacific Ocean. It provides the perfect home-base for island exploration and is ideal for an uplifting personal, family or group retreat.
