Retreat Place of the Year

One of our most favourite places and where we would happily send our sisters, mother, aunts and any woman we know for a retreat whether they were Buddhist or not. A wonderful place! Highly Recommended

Buddhist

Situated peacefully on the plains of the Welsh borderlands, this Buddhist women's community, Taraloka, acts as a focal point for women throughout the world from various walks of life. It provides inspiration and affords a glimpse of new spiritual and personal vistas for all who come.

Taraloka is one of the few retreat centres specifically run by women for women and it has developed a kind and gentle space in which all women may find relaxation and well supported in their spiritual journey.

Over the last fifteen years the Centre has established clear and simple methods of teaching meditation and Buddhism through its yearly programme. The retreats run from complete beginners to committed practising Buddhists. Guests come only on one of the retreats or events in the published programme. Those with no experience of meditation and Buddhism can come for an introductory course weekend. The programme teaches Buddhist meditation and study within the context of the Friends of the Western Buddhist order. It is done with careful guidance.

The retreat centre is separate from the Community house. All teachers are well qualified both in Buddhist teaching as well as in their specialist subject, such as music. Other features are yoga weekends, spiritual life and motherhood, and retreats. These events are usually held for two or three days over a weekend and offer an introduction to various meditation practices a well as a first exploration of Buddhist Principles and Ethics. All teachers are well qualified, having been practicing meditation and Buddhism for many years. The facilities are modern, light and airy. They have been converted from farm buildings and women did most of the work. There is a garden, views, a pond and flowers - in the early spring white magnolias are in bloom. The place is high on a hill rise and you can go for a walk in safety. Everywhere shines out with cleanliness and there is an art room for those who want to paint and make. Taroloka has made a solitary suite for a private retreat with a bedroom, small kitchen and conservatory, which could make you want to stay forever it, is so delightful.

On your stay you meet a selection of other women you might not ordinarily meet and this too can be a very spiritual experience. There is a strong emphasis here on ethical practice, aiming for more kindness, generosity, contentment, truthful speech and clarity of mind. Taraloka is place of peace, self-discovery and transformation.
