The Barn retreat is a working retreat centre - a place to come to retreat from the world at large and to work on the land. The atmosphere is contemplative and there are daily silent periods. Your full involvement in the daily schedule of sitting and work meditation and community interaction can be an unforgettable, and therapeutic experience.
The Barn Community is guided by the five Buddhist precepts but is non-denominational.
Open: All year round for men and women Sunday to Sunday. You do not have to be a Buddhist, but some established background in meditation helps as we sit three times daily for 40 minutes.
Rooms: 7 singles.
Facilities: Garden, library of books, tapes and CDs by prominent Buddhist authors and teachers. Woodworking equipment is available. Woodland hut (Kuti) for more advanced meditation practitioners who wish to do solitary practice. (by prior arrangement).
Spiritual enquiry: There are teachings three times per week by visiting Dharma teachers and regular talks at Sharpham House nearby
There is a yoga teacher on Mondays.
Work: consists of gardening, woodland maintenance, household care and upkeep, cooking, baking bread, preserving, looking after poultry and other small holding chores.
Meals: Meals are vegetarian and prepared by retreatants. Special diets possible.
Special Activities: Daily schedule of meditation, work and community interaction followed 6 days a week.
Situation: Beautiful location on the Sharpham Estate, on a hillside overlooking the River Dart - no roads visible.
Period of stay: 1 week minimum (Sunday to Sunday)– 6 months maximum.

Access: By car is best. 1 Hour walk from Totnes station. Lift available by prior arrangement.
